Welcome to the Black Nurses Association of the Greater Washington D.C. Area
The Black Nurses Association of Greater Washington, D.C. Area, Inc. (BNAofGWDCA) is the fourth chartered chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). BNA of GWDCA, in concurrence with the National Black Nurses Association is open to all active and retired licensed nurses (RNs and LPNs) and student nurses. BNA of GWDCA collaborates with other professionals and organizations, provides mentoring and tutorial services to Black nurses, nursing students and prospective nurses, and serves as the local nursing body to influence legislation and policies that affect Black consumers.

Members of the Black Nurses Association to invite you and your organization to nominate a candidate for the 2009 Black Nurse of the Year. You may download a copy of the Nurse of the Year application from this website. The eligibility requirements and the deadline date (October 15, 2008) are included in the body of the application. This prestigious honor will be awarded to an outstanding nurse at the 29th Annual Salute to the Black Nurse of the Year and Scholarship Awards Luncheon which will be held on March 1, 2009 at the Martin’s Crosswinds, Greenbelt, Maryland.

Additionally, please aware of the availability of two BNA Scholarships, The Johnella Banks Memorial Scholarship and the Felicia Brady Scholarship. Applications for both of these scholarships can be found on this website, as well. The deadline date is December 15, 2008 for the both the Banks and the Brady Scholarships. The awardees will be recognized at the 2009 Salute Luncheon.

BNA of GWDCA Scholarships
BNA of GWDCA will soon be offering a new scholarship for graduating seniors of local high schools throughout the Greater Washington, DC, Area. This new scholarship, the BNA of Greater Washington, DC, Area Founders Scholarship, is in honor of the founding members of the chapter, Cynthia Barr Edwards, Claudine Linder, Lillian Wade, Barbara Baskerville, Ada Cain, Janice Crouch and Bertha Speight (deceased). Information about the scholarship will be made available by February 2008.

BNA Launches the Make a Difference: Choose Nursing Program
BNA initiated the Make a Difference: Choose Nursing program to engage youth of middle and high school age to introduce them to careers in nursing as well as the other health professional careers. Interested students will be introduced to the many specialties in nursing and the various educational paths to professional nursing. Students will receive information regarding nursing education programs and financial resources available to those who pursue nursing as a career. BNA members will maintain contact and mentor youth who decide to choose a nursing career in order to promote and support their successful completion of the study of nursing and subsequent licensure.
