MAKE A DIFFERENCE: CHOOSE NURSING
Background
The Black Nurses Association of Greater Washington, DC, Area (BNA of GWDCA) was organized in 1975 and is the fourth chartered chapter of the National Black Nurses Association, Inc. (NBNA). BNA of GWDCA is a local professional organization with a membership of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, retired nurses and student nurses residing and/or working in the District of Columbia, Montgomery County, Prince Georges County, Maryland and some cities in Northern Virginia. Since its inception BNA of GWDCA has supported quality nursing education at all levels as a professional obligation. Consistent with the NBNA charter, the BNA of GWDCA is focused on the nursing profession and nursing students, vulnerable members of the African American community and coalition building for the elimination of health disparities and the professional growth of licensed nurses and nursing students.
Mission
The mission of BNA of GWDCA is to improve the capacity of youth, particularly African Americans youth, to recognize the nursing profession as a potential career choice. To this end, BNA has launched a new initiative, Make a Difference: Choose Nursing, to engage youth of middle and high school age and introduce them to careers in nursing as well as the other health professional careers. Students will be introduced to the many specialties in nursing and the various educational paths to professional nursing. Students will receive information regarding financial resources available to those who pursue nursing as a career. BNA members will maintain contact and mentor youth who decide to choose a nursing career in order to promote and support their successful completion of the study of nursing and licensure.
Purpose
The purpose of the Make a Difference: Choose Nursing initiative is to ensure that youth have the knowledge and understanding of the profession to enable them to make a decision to pursue a career in nursing. Additionally, BNA members will provide support and mentoring to students enrolled in a nursing education program to support their successful matriculation and subsequent licensure.
